The history behind the Peace Dove began with Rotarian Eleanor Kendell’s trip to the Rotary Peace Summit held in Windsor Ontario in 2008. She brought Peace home to our Rotary club and the community explaining the concept behind Rotary Peace Communities.
On September 21, 2012 Kitimat was declared a Rotary Peace Community by Mayor and Council. In 2013, a plaque commemorating this event was placed on a “Peace Rock” laid in Centennial Park.
With the thought to uplift and brighten the lives of people in Kitimat during COVID 19, Eleanor thought of having the Rotary Club of Kitimat erect an illuminated peace dove that people could drive by and see lit up on International Peace Day and also during the Christmas season.
